Native to the tropical forests of the Philippines, the gumamela (hibiscus rosa-sinensis Linn) flower is mostly cultivated for ornamental purposes in modern society. In Philippine herbal medicine, gumamela has been used to treat headaches, soothe coughs and sore throat, as well as high blood pressure among many other ailments. You may also find hibiscus used in floral teas and a supporting ingredient for moisturizing hair rinses to promote strength. While this isn’t medical advice, the imagery of this painting was created to encapsulate the playful energy and versatility of gumamela.
