The term “kulasa” can be used in many different contexts, it can be endearing, can be used with playful contempt, or in regards to one with mischievous intent. Blue naped parrots are an endemic species native to the Philippines; social, inquisitive, docile and chatty creatures, with the ability to mimic human speech, they are also sometimes seen feeding on crops, which may be an issue for some. Also referred to as “pikoy” colloquially, the Blue Naped Parrot is known as a national treasure of the Philippines. Painted onto handwoven textiles sourced from weavers in Iloilo, Philippines, by Rhona Doria, owner of Hablon Styles and Hues, this piece symbolizes how ingrained harmony is into Philippine culture and the importance of balance between artisans and the environment they draw inspiration from.
