Even the juiciest beans will be the easiest to miss if you don’t look close enough! Sigarilyas (winged bean/dragon bean) and dragon tongue beans could not look more different, but they’re both members of the same legume family. They just don’t look like it. Within dense vines or bushes, they sometimes grow just out of sight and are prolific. When I started gardening in 2019, I felt upset because I couldn’t grow certain Philippine vegetables due to the difference in climate between Canada and La Union. But then, I discovered the coolest looking beans and realized that they were named after different parts of the same whole: the dragon bean and dragon tongue bean. And thus, my inevitable journey of reconnecting to Philippine culture through nature started with beans and dragons.
