Sampaguita/Jasmine
Sampaguita/Jasmine

Original Painting by Marianne Valdez
The national flower of the Philippines, the sampaguita (jasminum sambac) flower. The etymology of sampaguita is taken from the root words, “sumpa kita” or “I promise you”, representing love and devotion to Philippine culture. These flowers are extremely versatile and are used in perfumes, social/traditional customs as welcome garlands, for remembrance, used as offerings in religious ceremonies, and provides people with a livelihood, cultivating and selling sampaguita flowers. This painting not only reflects my personal attribution of the sampaguita flower to freedom and dedication, but the boundless influence that nature has on shaping Filipino culture.
